Coffee – helps wake you up in the morning, gives you that immediate energy, and whether you like an espresso or a latte, you can’t help but love its unique aroma. But Coffee is way more than that.
Coffee is a fantastic anti-oxidant ingredient not just from a nutrition perspective, but also for skincare.
In this article we will explain:
- The difference between Green and Roasted coffee
- Green and Roasted coffee skin care benefits
- Types of Green and Roasted Coffee actives available for skincare
- Why Caffeine is a great skincare ingredient
Do you know the difference between GREEN COFFEE and ROASTED COFFEE?
1) Green Coffee is in its purest form pre-roasting and it has a green, herbal aroma. It is not edible but it used in skincare. Caffeine, the prized antioxidant, can be extracted very efficiently and in high concentration from Green Coffee.
2) Roasted Coffee is Green Coffee roasted for 15 up to 30 minutes at temperatures between 180 and 250 ° C. Roasted coffee has lost part of its antioxidant goodness because of the heat stress during roasting, but the flavor and aroma obtained are truly unique. Roasted Coffee is edible and used as a food and flavoring agent. Caffeine is present in lower concentrations.
Both coffee types are used in skincare but with different functions. 2 different extraction methods = 2 different types of actives.
GREEN COFFEE SKINCARE BENEFITS
Green Coffee has unique and potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and it is usually included in skincare formulations for face and eye care.
Green Coffee actives can be extracted by infusing the Green Beans in Glycerin or by cold-pressing the beans (when the beans are ripe, red colour, pre-roasting).
Green Coffee extract in Glycerin (water) is packed with:
Chlorogenic Acid – Reduces redness associated with excessive sunlight exposure and limits free-radicals damage
Ferulic Acid – Very potent antioxidant
Caffeine – Limits photo-damage, decrease skin roughness, and partially repairs wrinkles and fine lines.
Green Coffee cold-pressed oil is packed with:
Fatty acids – reduce photoaging and inflammatory skin conditions
Vitamin E – protective antioxidant against skin damage such as sunburn and environment stress
Sterols – Limit photo-damage, decrease skin roughness, and partly repairs wrinkles and fine lines.
* Green Coffee supercritical extract (CO2) is very similar to cold-pressed Green Coffee oil; however, CO2 extract has a higher price, higher actives integrity, and a longer shelf-life.
Green Coffee Seed Oil contains a negligible amount of Caffeine, while Coffee extract has a high concentration. This is because Caffeine is water-soluble.
One remarkable property of caffeine is the ability to dramatically limit photoaging. Caffeine increases apoptosis (programmed cell death) of UVB damaged keratinocytes (skin cells), so damaged skin cells are shred off faster before they cause photoaging and, in extreme cases, skin cancer.
ROASTED COFFEE NUTRITION AND SKIN BENEFITS
Taken internally (brewed drink) or applied topically, roasted coffee is a good antioxidant and can help improving circulation; Caffeine is usually included in skincare formulations for fluid retention + anti-cellulitis and for hair care. It can also be used as a body scrub as a grounded coffee.
Roasted Coffee brewed drink is packed with:
Chlorogenic Acid – Reduces redness associated with excessive sunlight exposure and limits free-radicals damage
Phenols – Very potent antioxidant
Caffeine – Limits photo-damage, decrease skin roughness, and partially repairs wrinkles and fine lines.
Roasted Coffee CO2 (supercritical) extract is packed with:
Fatty acids (different profile than green coffee, less active) – anti-inflammatory
Vitamin E – protective antioxidant against skin damage such as sunburn and environment stress
Sterols (different profile than green coffee, less active) – Limits photo-damage, decreases skin roughness, and partly repairs wrinkles and fine lines.
