Toner or Essence ? Everything you need to know

Let's admit it - Korean skincare not only changed the way we apply skincare products but got us more confused by new product categories we never ever heard of before, such as essence and ampoules.

The reality is that there is nothing new - just an extra step added to your beauty routine that may be a duplication of ingredients already included in your skincare products.

Let's try to understand a bit more in detail the difference between traditional TONERS and Korean-style ESSENCES, how to use them and how at Native Essentials we have incorporated them in our products.

What is a facial toner?

A toner is a quick-absorbing liquid that helps:

- removing excess dirt

- get rid of any other impurities left on your skin after cleansing

- balance your skin's PH level

- control enlarged pores

What types of skin are toners best for?

Facials toners can be used for oily to combination skin + skin with enlarged pores. They are not recommended for sensitive skin.

When should I use a toner?

After cleansing and before applying your water base serum or moisturiser, then oil.

Typical ingredients found in toners:

Some synthetic or partially natural toners contain alcohol, which is a very quick astringent agent but also a very drying and harsh ingredient you don't want to put on your skin. Good natural alternatives are Witch Hazel extract, citrus-based hydrosols, toners with skin-balancing actives like niacinamide (Vit B3).

What is a facial essence?

An Essence is a quick-absorbing liquid that helps:

- hydrating your skin before make up

- prepping your skin for the rest of your skincare routine

What types of skin are essences best for?

Facial essences can be used for all skin types but because of the hydrating properties of each ingredient, they are best for dry and dehydrated skin.

When should I use an essence?

After cleansing and before applying your water base serum or moisturiser, then oil.

Typical ingredients found in essences:

Compared to toners, essences contain more anti-oxidants, humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid, fermented actives, AHA's, plant extracts. Flowers and leaves hydrosols, especially Rose, are very good foundations for 100% natural essences.

Wait a minute!  Why are there no toners of essences within Native Essentials collection?

Yes, no single toners or essences, instead our 100% natural toners and essences are the foundation of our water products.

Combining toners/essences with other products saves your time and money, saves the planet with additional packaging, and gives you the best results from supercharged multitasking skincare.
