Face wipes - are they really good for you?

Posted by Daniela Pelonara on

Face wipes and make-removers - so convenient, so easy to use, a must-have item for the busy woman.  Many brands embraced the new trend very quickly and offered a variety of makeup remover and face wipes for every skin type and pockets.

Sadly, they are not as good as you might think. Here is why:

MYTH NO. 1 - THEY ARE GOOD FOR YOUR SKIN

Not exactly. Most of the wipes in the market contain a strong mix of preservatives, surfactants, antibacterial agents and even alcohol that are often irritant. Try using one of the wipes without rinsing off with water - it's very likely that you will feel even a slight stinging sensation.

They are also very drying, and this is not good news when you try to gently remove waterproof make up in delicate areas such as eyes and lips.

They often don't remove 100% of waterproof makeup and foundation as they do not contain emollients, ideal to deep cleanse without irritation.

MYTH NO. 2 - MADE WITH ORGANICS WIPES ARE GOOD

Few natural brands are offering 'made with 100% natural ingredients' wipes; while the ingredients they are made of are clean, they often use essential oils, known irritants for eyes and lips.

MYTH. 3 - WIPES CAN BE RECYCLED

Unless wipes are made of cellulose or biodegradable material, they are impossible to recycle or compost because of the unique synthetic composition of their fibers. Another issue is that they are packaged in plastic.

The encouraging news is that few companies are now developing post-consumer recycled fibers and will soon be offering non-woven eco wipes.

MYTH NO. 4 - THEY ARE NOT TOO EXPENSIVE

They are indeed expensive! On average a package of wipes contains 30 wipes; compare it with any liquid or cleansing balms and see how far can you go with your jar!

SO... WHAT IS BETTER FOR ME AND EARTH-FRIENDLY AT THE SAME TIME?

Liquid cleansers with clean ingredients, face oils without essential oils (we love Coconut oil), cleansing balms, natural exfoliants that come in bottles or jars. You can use a face muslin and wash it after use or a natural sponge.

Our SOLE is a multitasker that will remove makeup, deep cleanse, exfoliate, and mask - and is packaged in a glass jar fully recyclable.

Say no to single-use - love your skin, love planet Earth.
